Do pets like living with us?

Lots of people have dogs, cats, rabbits etc. as pets, but do they like living with us? I have a dog and a cat and they seem to like it but do they really? Maybe my dog gets too tired and doesn't like waking up early for her walks; just like we don't like waking up early for school or work. Maybe my cat feels left out because I am always playing with my dog. No one knows... What if  our pets don't like the food that we give them? What can they do? They can't tell us!

I know that cats have more freedom than dogs but why? Surely dogs are responsible enough too? Dogs may be jealous of cats as dogs have to do what their owners tell them too;  just like siblings are jealous of each other because the older one can do more things.

Overall, I think that our pets like living with us but also may get frustrated sometimes. Our pets get food, water and a nice shelter to stay in and they have a loving family to spend time with. They may get hungry a lot as we don't really know when they like to eat and dogs might not want to go on walks when we do.

Watch this video of a kitten having a nightmare. It's so cute and it shows you what cats can actually do!

  1. Interesting post. I think that it's different for different species of pet. For example, dogs were bred to live alongside humans and help with things like hunting or herding animals. It would be harder for dogs to live without people than it would be for cats, which are much more independent. Oh, and that cat hugging its kitten is the cutest thing I have ever seen!

  3. Rachel - you ask such good questions!

When our daughter Lily was born, our cat Roly got really lethargic and stopped cleaning himself. We brought him to the vet who asked "Have there been any changes at home recently?" to which we said "yes, we had a baby - but that was 6 weeks ago!" The vet then told us that Roly was depressed because he realised that the baby was never going to leave! He was used to being our baby first. He eventually got over it - but it really affected him for a while.

  5. Great post :-)

I used to worry all the time that my dog Alfie wasn't happy - even though as you say, he's warm and well-fed and all the rest. But dogs "think" differently to us and just being warm and fed and looked after is all he needs in his head. I think he does get bored sometimes though - just sitting on his cushion next to me while I'm on my computer must get a bit dull!

Oh dear - now I feel guilty again - better take him out! In the rain... :-(

  7. Well, I've asked our dogs, and their verdict is that they are pretty much happy to go for a walk at whatever time we want to take them - all day if possible! :-) As for the food thing, if our dogs or cat don't like the food we put down they simply refuse to eat it - luckily that doesn't happen often, but Bella point blank refused her breakfast last week, till I'd removed the chopped rabbit liver from it, then she wolfed down the kibble quite happily. True, cats are a bit more standoffish, but as your relationship with your dog grows, you'll see she's quite good at communicating with you, and letting you know what she likes and dislikes :-)
